It is a somewhat more lighthearted Todd Solonz (Happiness, Welcome to the Dollhouse) than usual who delivers this darkly comical story from his world of neuroses and shortcomings. The anti-hero of Dark Horse is Abe, a self-absorbed and unsympathetic loser who still lives with his parents (colourfully played by Christopher Walken and Mia Farrow). Abe’s good fortune lies in the fact that his self image doesn’t correspond with reality, so it is in good spirits – and with a hefty dose of imagination – that he sets about finding love. The object of his favour ends up being the depressed Miranda (Selma Blair) and a veritable catalogue of failures ensue. Expect many a harsh laugh, and to constantly choke on them. This is, after all, Todd Solondz.
