This is a story of the three teenage friends Huda, Rian and Syahid living and schooling in a pesantren (Islamic religious school) in a small village in Central Java, Indonesia. Within a month they will graduate and in different ways be forced to face adulthood. Huda searches his mother who he hasn’t seen since she dropped him off at school six years earlier, Rian plans to run away and work with a film company, and Syahid who comes from a poor farmer family is desperate to get together the money to fund an urgent liver transplant for his father.
When the World Trade Centre attack of 9/11 occurs this results in vast changes in all the three friends’ lives. Together with one of the teachers at their school they are accused of being members of a hard-line Islamic group known for its terrorist actions. Their lives are changed irrevocably. Their three personal stories are intertwined up until the moment when they are arrested and jailed. Pesantren: 3 Wishes 3 Loves tackles religious and social issues affecting Islamic youth and is easily accessible to a wide audience.
