The prize was previously handed over just before his Master Class at Lagerhuset in Gothenburg. Winterbottom says he is honored to join in Charlie Kaufman's footsteps who received last year's Honorary Dragon Award. The Master Class was led by the festivals artistic director Marit Kapla.

When Michael Winterbottom made his feature film Welcome to Sarajevo, 1997, he chose to actually film on location, in the battle-torn city of Sarajevo. This was just months after the fighting ended in the city and it added a sense of unsettling realism to the film. Welcome to Sarajevo was eventually nominated for a Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Other films by Winterbottom include the acclaimed Wonderland (1999) and 24 Hour Party People (2002), about Factory Records and the Manchester music scene. His latest feature,Trishna, is a modern adaptation of the Thomas Hardy novel Tess of d'Urbervilles and is screened at the festival.

The prize is worth almost SEK 1,000,000... Dance Music Now by Johan Jonason was awarded the short film prize Startsladden at Göteborg International Film Festival. The prize is worth almost SEK 1,000,000 (€ 117,000), making it one of the world's largest short film prizes.

With the statement "a film which portrays a creative tug of war between two male egos through humor and complexity" Johan Jonason’s Dance Music Now was awarded the Startsladden award by the jury.

The plot of Dance Music Now, which was also screened before the festival opening film Avalon, revolves around a neurotic singer who fails to deliver. He vents his frustration on those nearest at hand, capsizing an entire studio session.

The award is worth close to 1,000,000 SEK, consisting of cash, technical support and equipment – from rough cut to final cut. Startsladden is a collaborative award from technical companies in the trade association Resource Companies for Film & TV in Sweden, The Swedish Film Institute, Swedish Television, Film i Väst, Folkets Bio, Filmregion Stockholm – Mälardalen, Filmpool Nord, Film i Skåne, SF and the Swedish Union for Theatre, Artists and Media.

The festival audience voted for Sascha Fülscher’s animated Next Door Letters as the best short.

In the evenings the festival's own live web show Studio Dragon takes over the venue, delivering exciting interviews with interesting guests. All are welcome to sit in the audience! Later in the evening Lagerhuset is transformed into a cool club, with new musical acts and dj’s every night.

Opening film was the award-winning Swedish drama Avalon with Johannes Brost in the lead role. The audience can now look forward to ten days full of film screenings, seminars and parties.

Sweden's Minister of Culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth held an opening speech before the curtain went up, as did the Festival’s managing director Michael Fellenius and artistic director Marit Kapla. The Mai Zetterling scholarship was awarded to Eric Gandini, director of Videocracy and director Lisa Ohlin received the Göteborg Grand Film Award for her film Simon and the Oaks.

After the film the inauguration festivities continued at the new Clarion Hotel Post, where artists like Ane Brun, Familjen and Invasionen.

Årets gala går av stapeln den 26 februari.

Imorgon 23 januari får årets guldbaggevinnare sina priser på Cirkus i Stockholm. Precis som tidigare år har också göteborgspubliken sagt sitt i guldbaggefrågan. Inför årets gala arrangerade Göteborg International Film Festival tre specialvisningar av de nominerade långfilmerna i kategorin Årets bästa film 2011: Play, Apflickorna och Simon och ekarna.

Göteborgspubliken röstade fram Simon och ekarna i regi av Lisa Ohlin. Regissören till den vinnande filmen får ta emot Göteborgs Stora Filmpris på 50 000 kronor i samband med invigningen av filmfestivalen fredagen den 27 januari.

Göteborgs Stora Filmpris är ett samarbete mellan Göteborg International Film Festival och Göteborg & Co, Näringslivsenheten.
