Göteborg clothing brand Elvine dresses Göteborg International Film Festival for the festival 2010. On top of that, Ekta, the artist behind the festival poster has designed his own t-shirt collection for Elvine.

Elvine is named after the founder Daniel Mänd’s grandmother who was a seamstress in Estonia. Elvines collections are inspired by the city of Göteborg’s unrefined subcultures and the legacy of traditional craftsmanship which results in relaxed clothes with high quality – sophisticated clothes for unsophisticated behavior. Clothes that the creators behind them – and now also the festival creators – want to carry.

— It feels great to be able to join this cooperation between GIFF, Ekta and Elvine.
On one hand because we all come from Göteborg but on the other because it just feels natural, even though we all come from different trades, says Mattias Edenholm, from Elvine.

The collection designed by street artist Ekta consists of unique t-shirts with typical Ekta motifs.
At the festival office in Göteborg we work 24/7 at the moment. But before we take at least a few days of Christmas holidays we want to take the opportunity to present three of the high profile guests attending the 33rd Göteborg International Film Festival.

Three christmas presents:

Christmas present no 1: Jessica Hausner, Austria, and her new film Lourdes
Christine has been confined to a wheelchair for most of her life. In
order to escape her isolation, she makes a journey to Lourdes, the
iconic site of pilgrimage in the Pyrenees mountains. She wakes
up one morning seemingly cured by a miracle. The leader of the
pilgrimage group, a handsome 40-year-old volunteer from the
Order of Malta, begins to take an interest in her. She tries to hold
on to this newfound chance for happiness, while her cure provokes
envy and admiration.

Jessica Hausner was born in 1972 in Vienna, Austria. In 2001,
Lovely Rita, her first feature film, was presented in Un Certain Regard as well as her second feature Hotel. Lourdes is her third film.
Jessica Hausner will be present in Göteborg January 29-31.
Lourdes is distributed by Folkets Bio.

Christmas present no 2: Günter Wallraff, Germany, and his film Günter Wallraff: Black On White
Black on White features Günter Wallraff as he traveled undercover across Germany as a Somali, wearing a dark-haired curly wig and with his white skin painted black. He spent most of his time in mostly white areas of Germany, speaking with an accent.

Günter Wallraff is an author and undercover journalist, best known for his books "Der Aufmacher" (Lead Story, 1977) and "Ganz unten" (Lowest of the Low, 1985). The word "wallraffa" became a Swedish expression for describing his type of investigating journalism.
Günter Wallraff will be in Göteborg February 1-3. On the 2nd he will give a Masterclass.

Christmas present no 3: Armando Iannucci, Great Britain
Armando Iannucci is a comedian, writer, producer, tv host and director.
He has written and produced numerous critically acclaimed television and radio comedy shows, notably The Mary Whitehouse Experience and On The Hour. Iannucci has also fronted his own satirical programmes. The Thick Of It, which won Best New TV Comedy at the 2005 British Comedy Awards, and the spoof clip show Time Trumpet, were both written/directed and co-produced by Armando Iannucci. His recently released feature film In The Loop is a comedy set in the world of Whitehall and Washington, Armando is a regular columnist for The Observer.
Armando Iannucci will be present in Göteborg February 2-5.

The word ”Sharing” will be the main theme during the 33rd Göteborg International Film Festival.

– The idea came to mind when a political party called The Pirate Party got 7% of the Swedish votes in the election fo the EU Parliament and it became obvious that the immaterial rights on the Internet is a thing that really concerns people. Another source of inspiration is of course the Copenhagen Climate Conference, where the subject is the sharing of natural resources, says Festival Director Marit Kapla.

The Sharing theme will pervade the whole festival; seminars , an extensive art film programme and of course, the main film programme. And of course the the meeting point for all the 35 000 festival visitors: The Festival tent, where gourmet chef Leif Mannerström – normally the one serving stars as Bruce Springsteen and Bono on their Göteborg stop overs – will share his knowledge about Swedish food and cooking with the hungry film buffs.

Watch clip from the press conference

Africa in focus at festival 2010

During Göteborg International Film Festival 2010 we take a closer look at the African continent. Among the highlighted films is Soul Boy from Kenya, produced by Tom Tykwer.

– There are so many things going on in the countries on the African continent and it is important to find and screen films portraying it, created by the people who live and work there, says Marit Kapla, festival director at Göteborg International Film Festival.

Last winter a Swedish delegation with representatives from different organizations traveled to the Fespaco festival, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The goal was to find new ways of cooperating with filmmakers from the African countries.

The cooperation with the Rotterdam festival and their project “Forget Africa” is another measure to look for films and filmmakers in a new way.

– Normally the African films screened at international festivals come from North Africa, the country South Africa and the former French colonies. Due to the extremely exciting “Forget Africa” project we will be able to give a more complete picture of the African film landscape this time, says Marit Kapla.

The African focus will be presented in several different ways during the festival:

• In the film programme: The African programme consists so far of nine films – stretching from music documentaries to realistic stories from the hoods in Kenya to the upper middle class in Mali:

- Burdening Memories of a Cleaning Lady (Souvenirs encombrants d’une femme de ménage) by Danii Kouyaté, Burkina Faso
- Le Fauteuil by Missa Hebié, Burkina Faso
- Harragas by Merzak Allouache, Algeria/France
- Sawa by Martin Nganguem Kamdem, Cameroon
- Seasons of a Life by Charles Shema Joyah, Malawi
- Shirley Adams by Oliver Hermanus, South Africa/USA
- Soul Boy by Hawa Essuman, Kenya/Germany
- St Louis Blues (Un transport en commun) by Dyana Gaye, Senegal/France
- Tell Me Who You Are (Min Yè) by Souleymane Cissé, Mali

• Through the project “Forget Africa”, in cooperation with International Film Festival Rotterdam. Around ten African projects will be presented, in pairs with international film makers who have documented their meetings with chosen African countries.

During the last six months Rotterdam programmer Gertjan Zuilhof, together with commisioned daring film makers from all over the world, has travelled to African countries normally almost invisible on the cinematic map. The goal was to rediscover a continent on its own terms.

Read more about “Forget Africa”

• In the seminars “Forget Africa” and “Producing African films”, where representatives from the festival’s film fund, financed by SIDA, participate together with African film makers.

• On the guest list. At least four representatives from “Forget Africa” will attend, as well as several other directors of the films in the programme.

• At parties, events and happenings during the festival period.
