A French family with two daughters moves to a new neighbourhood. It's the middle of the summer holidays and the oldest daughter, Laure, has plenty of time to get to know the local kids. To them, however, she introduces herself as a boy named Mickaël. And why would they doubt her? Céline Sciamma previous film, Water Lilies (2007), was nominated for GIFF's Ingmar Bergman International Debut Award. It dealt with teenagers disovering their sexuality - here, she focuses on younger kids, which is very refreshing! Laure/Michaël is faced with the drama of her life, as the start of school and the great revelation draws near, but at the same time Sciamma delicately shows how a child?s gender identity actually doesn?t have to be a matter of life and death. Tomboy is a gem, for the whole family.
