In her new film, Madonna takes a look at Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee who in 1936 made the British regent Edward VII renounce the throne to his brother, Colin Firth ... ahem, George VI. Andrea Riseborough is worth the price of admission alone, for her interpretation of Wallis as a clever, funny and hard-headed woman, whose sacrifices in the shadow of Edward may have been just as big as his. There is a good flow to the film, which combines historic events with a parallel storyline where Abbie Cornish plays a modern, unhappily married woman obsessed with the royal couple. Madonna’s true passion can be seen in the revelling in haute couture and jewellery from the 1930s and 1940s, which is sure to delight many a fashionista.
